1. Who we are
This website is run by Sew Can We, a family business at 5 Station Parade, Harrogate, HG1 1UF. We decide how your collected personal information is used, which makes us the “data controller” under UK data protection law.
2. What information we collect
When you use the contact form: your name, email address, phone number (if you give it), your message, and any photos you attach.
When you call, email or visit us: the details you give us so we can discuss and carry out your job, such as your name, contact details and what you’d like done.
When you browse the site: basic technical information, like your device type, browser, approximate location and which pages you looked at. This is collected through cookies and similar tools (see section 7).
We don’t ask for payment details through this website, because our website is informatory only, you can’t buy or book anything on it.
3. Why we use your information
To reply to your enquiry and talk through your job. This is needed to deal with your request before we agree any work.
To carry out and look after your job once you’re a customer, for example contacting you when it’s ready.
To keep the website working and see how people use it, so we can improve it. This is in our legitimate interest as a small business.
To keep records, such as for tax and accounting, where the law requires it.
We might use before and after pictures taken by us of your garments and projects for marketing purposes. We’ll never include your name or any other personal details.
4. Who we share it with
We only share your information with people who help us run the business and the website:
Squarespace, which hosts this website and stores form submissions.
Google, for the map, reviews, and website analytics, and for our email.
Our accountant or other advisers, if needed, for record keeping.
These companies have their own privacy policies. Some of them, including Squarespace and Google, may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use legal safeguards to protect it. We may also share information if the law requires us to.
5. How long we keep it
Enquiries that don’t turn into a job: 3 months, then we delete them.
Customer job records: 6 years, so we can meet our accounting and legal duties.
Website analytics data: kept for the period set in the analytics tool, usually 36 months.
6. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
ask for a copy of the information we hold about you
ask us to correct anything that’s wrong
ask us to delete your information
ask us to limit or stop using your information
object to us using your information in certain ways
ask for your information in a format you can move elsewhere
To use any of these, just email on sewcanwe@gmail.com. We’ll reply within one month. Some rights have exceptions, for example we may need to keep job records for legal reasons.
7. Cookies
This site uses cookies, which are small files stored on your device. Some are essential to make the site work. Others, like analytics and the Google map, help us understand how the site is used. When you first visit, you can choose which non-essential cookies to accept, and you can change your mind at any time through your browser settings or the cookie banner.
8. Photos you send us
If you attach photos, we’ll use them to understand your request and give you advice. We won’t share them publicly, or use them on our website or social media, without asking you first. Please don’t send photos showing other people’s faces unless they’re happy for you to share them.
9. Children
This website isn’t aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If a parent or guardian contacts us about a child’s clothing, we’ll only use the details to deal with the job.
Explicit and/or predatory photos will be reported to the authorities.
10. Keeping your information safe
We take sensible steps to protect your information, and our website host and email provider have their own security measures. No online system is 100% secure, so please only send us what you’re comfortable sharing.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date at the top.
12. Complaints
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please talk to us first and we’ll do our best to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
